About Family Foods

HISTORY

Emily's, Inc. was established in 1992 under the name Social Service Foods, Inc.  Our initial objective was to serve children’s meals to our affiliated Child Development childcare centers.  We subsequently expanded our focus to include a broad spectrum of publicly funded clients including senior citizens, daycare centers, homeless shelters and vocational rehabilitation companies.  To reflect the broadening of our client-base into other areas of food services, principally corporate catering and home replacement meals, the Social Service Foods, Inc. name was changed to Family Food Services, Inc. in the fall of 1999.  Staff with the experience and skills to accommodate these expanded goals were recruited and then hired.

For its first few years, the company operated out of a church in Cambridge. The kitchen facility was then relocated to 174 Portland Street in Boston where, in addition to servicing our existing childcare and senior clients, we operated a cafeteria which prepared hot breakfasts and lunches for 100 to 150 individuals daily and provided catering for staff, board functions and meetings. As our business further expanded, we eventually outgrew that facility. From July of 1999 to October of 2002, Family Food Services, Inc. operated out of a 4,780 square foot commissary located at 9 Arlington Street, Chelsea, MA. In May 2002, Family Foods purchased the property formerly occupied by "Rita's Catering and Bakery" at 35-41 Williams Street in Chelsea just a few blocks away from Arlington Street. Family Foods relocated its entire facility to this new 6,700 square foot commissary over one weekend in October 2002 with no interruption of service to its clients. Currently, our kitchen capabilities along with our fleet of nine vans and trucks allow us to currently produce and deliver an average of 2,300 meals per day to our clients.
